Days of Infamy (3)

March 18 was the culmination of terror in Kauswagan as government forces retake the town; but unfortunately, it was also the start of a more horrifying experience in many parts of Mindanao as battle lines were slowly drawn. Escalation of hostilities became certain. The signs were clear as residents of nearby towns prepared also for the worst. Many evacuated to other areas as precautionary measure. Schools were closed, farm works ceased, daily routine in once peaceful communities were in disarray as widespread anxiety grew every moment. Then on March 21, 2000, President Estrada declared an “all-out war” against the MILF during his visit in Kauswagan, LDN. The civilians’ fear has become a reality…a dreadful reality that will haunt also many of us for years.
